How Is Acupuncture LGBTQIAS2+ Affirming Healthcare?

Being an advocate for creating better, affirming clinical spaces for all bodies is essential to my approach as an Acupuncturist. And as a queer, non-binary health care provider, I am especially passionate about serving the LQBTQIA2S+ community.

How exactly does Acupuncture help LGBTQIA2S+ folks?

Mental Health-

  • While resting on the table you get to feel safe in your body

  • You have a space to process emotions and how they show up in your body

  • Your parasympathetic system lets you rest

  • One way that Acupuncture works is lowering your cortisol stress hormones and getting your body in parasympathetic mode so that you can “rest and digest”

Trust & Communication-

  • You have an intentional space to feel safe and trusting of your experience and emotions

  • You learn and grow awareness on how your body communicates with you so that you can prevent burning yourself out, overdoing it, etc

Energy Levels-

  • You can recharge your battery (because let’s be real, being queer can be somewhat exhausting)

  • Acupuncture can help balance your hormones so that you don’t have peaks and valleys with your energy levels

  • We can help improve your sleep, whether you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night

Hormonal Balance-

  • Whether on or starting HRT or not taking any hormones at all, your body’s hormones impact your mental health, heart health, bone health, and more.

  • Acupuncture can help balance the activity of the HPA axis, which regulates hormones like cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormones

Fertility Support-

  • You have a safe and affirming space to talk about your fertility goals

  • Acupuncture can improve IVF and IUI outcomes

  • I have the skills and knowledge to build you a network of providers who with support your path to parenthood

Pain Management-

  • Chronic stress can show up in the body as tension, tightness, and guarding of the body

  • Using a chest binder can cause pain, tension, and limited mobility in your neck and thoracic spine

  • Acupuncture works wonders at helping lower pain levels and ease systematic tightening and guarding patterns in the body

Pre and Post Operative Care-

  • Acupuncture can help with lowering pain levels and swelling after surgery

  • We can help with healing and scar reduction after surgery

  • I make sure to collaborate other health care providers (such as PTs, massage therapists, and more) so you can feel better faster

Acupuncture helps with so much!

I could go on and on about how it is beneficial for LGBTQIA+ patients…

Acupuncture relates to Queerness because it, too, is often seen as the other/ not the real thing. And because of that, can offer a delightful element of surprise and expansiveness!
